What to Wear-Spring Portrait Sessions
Spring has sprung here in New England! With warmer weather and budding trees people are venturing back outside and scheduling outdoor photoshoots. April, May, and June are popular months for family, senior, and engagement sessions. Spring is my favorite season and also my favorite time of year to take pictures. Early spring, however, can be challenging. The weather can be chilly and sometimes those beautiful spring blossoms take their time making an appearance. Here are some tips to make your spring session pop right alongside those flowers!
1. Dress for the weather!
Nothing says spring like a pair of rain boots! Not only can these classic spring accessories brighten the gloomiest of days, but they provide protection against the mud and puddles we are plagued with this time of year. As you'll see below, I encourage adding pops of bright colors to spring photos and these rain boots can be the perfect way to do that. Bonus, puddle splashing photos can be SUPER cute!
2. Incorporate spring patterns
Flowers not quite up yet? Wear a floral print dress to create a garden of your own! Nothing says spring like a classic spring dress or printed shirt.
3. Wear spring colors!
In early spring, the pastels of the season are very subtly spread out through budding trees, sprouting grass, and blossoming flowers. Choosing seasonal spring colors helps to highlight those colors. Watch how the purples in this young man's shirt bring out the tiny purple flowers in the background.
4. Add a bold pop of color
This applies to any season, but can be especially fun in springtime. Bring your family session to life with a pop of color amongst the other neutrals. As I've said in my previous post about what to wear for photoshoots, outfits should be coordinating and not matching. Dispersing a pop of color ties it all together.
5. Wear layers
Charles Dickens said in Great Expectations, “It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” Any New Englander knows this to be true during the spring months. Wearing layers can be very helpful during an outdoor photoshoot. We'll be moving around from sun to shade. Keeping everyone happy, especially my youngest clients, is important. A spring sweater or jacket can be the perfect way to look stylish and keep comfortable. It also adds versatility as we take it on and off in different photos.
