Literally. It's August and it's HOT. Many of us in the northeast are flocking to the ocean, lake, or ANY body of swimmable water. It's a popular choice, taking family, senior, or engagement photos at the water's edge. Whether you're on vacation, or just want to get that summertime feel in your photos here are some tips to help make the most of your beach photoshoot.
What to Wear
To get that light and airy, beachy feel, I highly suggest wearing light, neutral colors. Whites, beige, and even a pop of pale pastel will pair perfectly with sand, water, and blue skies. They are flattering on every skin tone. Light patterns are ok, but make sure they are muted and don't take over the photo. Keep accessories to a minimum.
Go Barefoot!
Speaking of what to wear, keep footwear simple or go completely barefoot. Leave the wedges, heels, and dress shoes at home. Neutral sandals, flip flops, and bare feet work best. Toes in the sand help to keep the shoot casual and comfortable!
Get Your Feet Wet
Don't be afraid to get right in the water. Whether you're on a lake or at the ocean being prepared to get wet is always wise and definitely memorable. I would like to add that it can make for the best candid shots too. Nothing beats splashing and giggling! I always recommend that we save the "getting in the water shots" for last so that everyone isn't soaked the entire shoot.
The girls in the above photo came to the shoot dressed in beautiful matching dresses. Mom told me at the beginning of the shoot that she was totally comfortable with the girls getting wet and having fun. At the end of the shoot, I announced that they could get right in the lake! The two girls looked at me in disbelief. They looked at their mother for permission. We both assured them that it was fine. After some coaxing they got in and had an absolute blast!
Watch the Light
Ideally your beach photoshoot should be scheduled in the morning or late afternoon/early evening. Beaches are usually wide open spaces and offer little to no protection from the sun. This is great for sunbathing and volleyball, but not so great for faces in photographs. Harsh, direct sunlight can make for squinted eyes and harsh facial shadows.
HAVE FUN
Last, but most importantly, HAVE FUN! Make your photoshoot your own. Don't forget to let loose and have a good time. I promise it really will shine through in your pictures. Embrace the sun, wind in your hair, sandy feet, and splashing water!
