Many people shy away from scheduling portrait sessions during the winter months here in western Massachusetts. The wind can be brutal and the temperatures freezing. Lack of leaf cover can make for some tough shadows and bland backgrounds. I'm here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way! Here are some helpful tips for making that winter family, senior, or engagement session not only unique, but absolutely gorgeous!
1. Bundle up!
Dressing for the cold temperatures will not only help you to feel more comfortable during your session, but will help you to LOOK more comfortable. This tip is extremely important for photoshoots with children as they have a tough time hiding it. Wear the cozy sweaters, bring your nice coats, and/or coordinate those hats and mittens! If you want to take your coats off for a shot or two, that's fine, but have it ready to go between takes.
2. Embrace the winter foliage
Winter doesn't usually come to mind when you think of foliage. We think of vibrant yellow, orange, and red leaves or brightly colored spring blossoms. There is plenty to love about winter foliage too! Evergreens, and winterberries are just some of the beautiful backdrops for winter.
3. Find a barn or building
If you're really not feeling the bare trees and evergreen, posing in front of a funky barn or pretty brick building is a great option regardless of the season. Many clients will choose to use their own home as the backdrop for their photos. Spent a lot of time decorating for the holidays? Show it off in your family photos! You can take pictures from different angles, creating so many opportunities for creative shots!
4. Let it snow!
Let's not forget about the obvious. Snow can make for some STELLAR portraits. Snow acts like a white reflector on a cloudy day, creating the most flattering natural light around!
5. Soak up the sun
Sunny days during the winter months can be challenging to photograph in. The lack of leaves can make it very difficult to find consistent, even light. Have no fear! The sun in the winter tends to be lower and weaker than summer/fall and one of my favorite things to do is shoot right into it for a glowing, sun kissed look. Yes, I said sun kissed and winter in the same sentence!
In closing, why should the warmer months get all of the love?! I mean, don't get my wrong, I love a warm, summer's day as much as the next New Englander, but I want to stress how lovely winter photography can be. Embrace the cold, snuggle up next to someone you love, and take those pictures!
